"HIGH QUALITY, PRACTICAL COACHING EXPERIENCE "

     The Athletic Performance Department at The University of Vermont has unpaid internship opportunities available for fall, spring and summer semesters.  This internship will provide selected candidates with practical knowledge and experience in the field strength and conditioning within the collegiate setting.  Responsibilities will include but are not limited too facility cleanup and maintenance, setup and breakdown of team lifts, projects throughout the semester, attendance to weekly coaching university sessions, assisting in the implementation of team training sessions and various other tasks designated by the Athletic Performance Staff.

 

     The ideal candidate is someone who is currently enrolled or completed an undergaduate or graduate college degree program in Exercise Science or related field of study and needs a professional internship for college credits or to stay relevant in the field of collegiate strength and conditioning.  Exceptions may be made for anyone who has a background in strength and conditioning, athletics and has a strong work ethic and desire to break into the field.  These candidates will be evaluated on a case by case basis.  Other preferred qualifications include certification from a recognized governing body, (NSCA, ACSM, USAW, CsCCa, etc.), CPR/AED certification, previous intern or coaching experience, former personal athletic experience.

     

     Selected candidates can expect to work a non-traditional work schedule between 30-40+ hours per week, including early mornings and potentially weekends.  Before arrival, candidates will receive a detailed "internship development program" and access to a web based intern manual with various readings & video's to guide your education.  Upon completion of the assigned materials, the Athletic Performance staff will assign each intern an individualized "assessment" to ensure proper understanding of the material.  These "assessments" will be target each interns "area of weakness" in order to help further the development of the intern as a coach.  The goal at the end of the semester is to have a better understanding of what it is like to be a collegiate strength coach, gain valuable on the floor coaching experience, get connected to the best resources for information on various training topics and get "fast-tracked" to how we do things here at Vermont Athletic Performance.  

 

     The following is a list of some of the educational/Instructional topics we will cover over the course of a semester internship:

  • Training Systems:

    • Tri-phasic Training System (Cal Dietz)

    • Tier System (Joe Kenn)

    • High/Low Training System (Charile Francis/James Smith/Buddy Morris)

    • Westside Method (Louie Simmons)

 

  • Skills Learned:

    • Exercise Technique – Proper instruction of all major Powerlifts, Olympic lifts, Medicine Ball Throws, Plyometrics and accessory lifts

    • Speed Development – Proper instruction of Acceleration & Max Velocity Mechanics based off the work of Loren Seagrave, Ralph Mann and James Smith

    • Deceleration/Agility Development – Based of the work of Parisi Speed School

    • Mobility/Recovery methods – Methods learned from Kelly Starrett to enhance mobility and prevent injury

    • Fusionetics Movement Screen - How to implement, assess and prescribe correctives

   

      Inquiries must be received 2 weeks prior to internship period below:

 

  • Summer Internship:  2nd week of June till Second week of August (8 weeks)

  • Fall Internship:  Last week of August till Mid December (17 weeks)

  • Spring Internship:  Mid-January till End of April (17 weeks)
